Schools are out, we are at the pool and I can hear the ice cream truck coming up the street. As soon as the truck plays the ‘ice cream music’; the kids come running. The epitome of summer memories, right?
My friend leans over to me and says; “my son can have some as long as it doesn’t have any artificial color in it. I have discovered that those colors make him completely hyper!” She kept on telling me about what she had learned about artificial food colors and how she was glad to no longer be in the dark about this.

  • Artificial colors have been linked to a rainbow of risks to include hyperactivity in children, cancer (in animal studies) and allergic reactions according to a report from The Center for Science in Public Interest.
  • Each year in the US, more than 15 million pounds of dyes are used in foods to include candies, frostings, macaroni and cheese (Kraft), salad dressings, pickles, cereals, sodas and other beverages (Gatorade, Propel etc), chips, fruit snacks, yogurt (YoPlait), jelly, coffee creamer, and even Pillsbury dough!
  • In the U.K., food products containing artificial dye are required to have a warning label. The label states that the food “may have an adverse affect on activity and attention in children”.
