Is Your Check Engine Light On?

I was driving down the highway when I noticed vibrations in the pedal when braking. My car mechanic assured me I could continue driving safely until my scheduled appointment ten days later. He said the rear brake pads are worn down and the rotor is rusty. Knowing I’d be driving a car full of kids to soccer and my 19-year-old would be driving the car as well, I didn’t want to take any chances so I found a way to get my car serviced immediately.

I thought of this car maintenance situation when I noticed my body (and spirit) were giving me the signals that I was in much need of some TLC. I had been running hard with various work and family responsibilities the last month. My energy was low, I felt out of touch with myself, and my Oura ring was signaling poor overnight recovery and suggesting I go into ‘rest mode’.

I looked at my calendar to see where I could squeeze in some me time and I saw no openings unless I’d start canceling things. The thought of canceling some meetings without being ‘sick’ felt irresponsible and flaky at first. Then I thought of the car situation and how I didn’t think twice about being proactive and not taking a chance at the car breaking down.

And that’s when I said, ok I’m taking a ‘sick preventative day’. We deserve to treat ourselves the same, and actually better than a car! I canceled all my meetings today in the name of walking my talk around preventative health and proactive self-care.

I hope you give yourself permission to sometimes do the same. Don’t wait for your body to break down to start taking care of yourself. Remember, self-care is not selfish, it’s ‘self-preservation’. And no one is coming to do the self-care for you. It’s all about setting boundaries.

Plus, this weekend is Mother’s Day, so this is also my gift to myself.

If this philosophy inspires you, I invite you to join my RESET starting on Monday, May 15th where we will focus for three weeks on prioritizing self-care and squeaky-clean nutrition. This program emphasizes managing blood sugar levels (which play into cravings, energy, and weight management), inflammation, and various aspect of self-care.

Perhaps that is THE nourishment your body and soul desire this month? Will you gift yourself that opportunity? To learn more and sign up for the Spring RESET, click here.

Be well!
